EnglishHow old do you have to be to rent a car?
Renting a car can provide a sense of freedom and flexibility, allowing you to explore new places and embark on exciting adventures. However, if you are under 25, you may have questions about how old you need to be to rent a car, what requirements you must meet, and what considerations young drivers should keep in mind.
If you are between 21 and 24 years old and want to rent a car, be prepared for a young driver fee. This additional charge covers the higher risk associated with less experienced drivers. Make sure to include this fee in your budget when planning your rental.
To rent a car under 25, you generally need:
A valid driver’s license
An identity card or passport
A debit or credit card in your name
Some rental companies may have additional requirements, so it’s always a good idea to contact them in advance to ensure you have all necessary documentation.
The young driver fee, also called the Young Driver Surcharge, is an extra charge applied by many car rental companies when renting to drivers under a certain age, usually 25.
This fee:
Covers the higher risk of less experienced drivers
Varies depending on the rental company, location, and local regulations
May be waived for certain promotions or car categories
While it’s not always possible to eliminate the young driver fee completely, you can try these strategies to minimize costs:
Look for special offers for young drivers
Consider different car categories (smaller cars may have lower fees)
Rent outside airport locations to reduce extra charges
Negotiate with the rental company for a fee waiver
Note: Policies vary by company, so always check requirements before renting.
