Located about 10 km from Bran Castle, in the Moeciu commune of Brasov County, lies the picturesque Pestera Village. The two caves, Small Cave (Peștera Mică) and Large Cave (Peștera Mare) or Bat Cave (Peștera Liliecilor), are situated in the same limestone massif called Dealul Bisericii at an altitude of approximately 950 meters.
The caves are only 11 meters apart.
Small Cave is 8.7 meters long and 5.7 meters wide at the entrance. Sediments contain scarce archaeological remains, including some bones and quartz fragments.
Large Cave stretches 162 meters with a single main gallery.
Located 5 km from Moeciu, on the eastern slope of Dealul Bisericii hill, the Bat Cave was formed by erosion caused by a tributary of the Valea cu Cale stream. It is named after the numerous colonies of bats that inhabit it. Also known as the Big Cave from Peștera Village or Badichii Cave, it was first documented centuries ago but explored thoroughly only in the late 20th century.
The cave is easy to visit, extending 370 meters with 109 meters of active gallery and a 10-meter elevation difference. The interior features limestone formations, “tears of the earth,” and colorful ceilings. Although no special equipment is needed besides a flashlight, protective clothing is recommended to avoid mud and bat droppings.
The monastery is located in Peștera Village, Brașov County, Moeciu commune, along DN 73 (Brașov–Pitești road), 30 km from Brașov city, 25 km from Predeal, and 10 km from Bran Castle. It can be reached via Moeciu village, about 7 km away.
The site lies within the Piatra Craiului National Park, in the Southern Carpathians, between the Piatra Craiului and Bucegi massifs.
